I actually did want the output of 'cvs version' and not 'cvs --version' as the
former reports the server version too, but maybe that didn't work until 1.11?
A quick glance at the logs seems to imply this is the case.  Sorry.

It's also possible that the message has simply been changed.  Many bugs have
been fixed since 1.10.5.  If you can't figure out what is wrong you might try
upgrading your client and maybe your server.  1.11 Binaries for NT and other
OSes are available on CVSHome.org.
