If you're going to allow anonymous CVS access, the best way to do this is to have the tarball be an anonymously checked-out working directory complete with metadata in CVS subdirectories. If you're not going to allow anonymous access, then it's probably best to make interested people do a full checkout in a new directory rather than trying to overlay an existing directory of unknown provenance. -Larry Jones
Thanks for your answer.Well, you have hit the issue on the head there -- to butcher a metaphor. The problem is that reasonably speaking, I can't expect people to know up front whether they will want to contribute to the project. And because it is web stuff, it is not as if I am distributing a binary vs. source. It is all scripts (PHP).
So... another question is, if I start someone off with anonymous CVS, and then they decide Yeah Boy I Wanna Contribute, is it messy & clumsy to change them to a new username with commit privileges? They would be using the repository via pserver.
