How large is the archive file?

CVS doesn't handle binary files all that well. The archive files wind up eating
a lot of disk space. I'm not sure how CVS handles the archive file, but it's
conceivable that the entire file might have to be loaded into memory.

Recently I tried to commit a 1.7Mb file to our CVS repository and
got an out of memory error from CVS. As it turns out, the machine
had a default ulimit of 33Mb of swap for users. Raising this limit
seemed to make the problem go away.

Why in the world does CVS need over 33 Megs of memory to
check in a 1.7 Meg binary file? That seems a little outrageous!
