I think that is a general R question (or a sig-mac R question), 
and i don't know the answer. 

There were a lot of improvements in supporting 
different languages/character sets recently in R, 
and i know some people who used Japanese labels on R plots, 
so that should be possible. 

Try to set up an UTF-8 locale first, i suggest to read
Section 7 Internationalization and Localization
