First, the bug doesn't seem to be present with Texinfo 6.0, only with
6.1, so you could use the texinfo.tex from 6.0 instead. There would be
some small differences in formatting.

I think I've gotten to the bottom of the problem.

Thanks so much for the patch.  It works for me.  Will this be put into the mainline distribution of Texinfo so it does not crop up again?
