Many popular character encodings can encode the degree symbol. For
example, the code 0xB0 is used in:
ISO-8859-1
ISO-8859-2
ISO-8859-3
ISO-8859-4
ISO-8859-7
ISO-8859-8
ISO-8859-9
ISO-8859-10
ISO-8859-13
ISO-8859-15
ISO-8859-16
Unfortunately, there is no such symbol in US-ASCII (and some other
encodings like ISO-8859-5), in which case representing the degree
symbol with "o" character is better than "degrees", because "o" is
just a visual approximation and does not imply anything about the
document's language.
