empty table cells?

I'm the maintainer for the Python documentation.  Our documentation is
maintained in LaTeX, but we have scripts to convert our documents to
texinfo for conversion to info.

We've added markup that generates a 2-column table, but the first cell
can be empty.  Is there a way to have an empty first cell?  Something
like this:

@table @foo
@item    symbol      some long description
@itemxx  {}          more description
