[Help-tar] Detecting DAT tape errors?

Two questions concerning detection of errors in a DAT tape:

* I assume that most modern DAT tape drives store data together with error
  correction codes (check sums) in order to detect when data has been mangled. 
  Is this assumption correct?

* What error message would tar spit out in case the drive detects that the
  data has been mangled?
