Yes.
Can you open random X applications from commandline (e.g. xev, or xclock)?

Sorry, xdev and xclock both work.
Could you run
strace octave > /tmp/output 2>&1

look at the final part of  /tmp/output near where it crashes. Maybe attach and post the file here.
