Google helped me find Octave bug #45348 [1] and Mesa bug #36193 [2],
both of which seem related to specific Intel video hardware and maybe
specific versions of Mesa.
Are you running 14.04 without HWE updates (Mesa 10.1) or with HWE
updates (Mesa 10.5) [3]? The version of Mesa may be significant. Can you
try upgrading/downgrading to see if you get different results? Do you
have different video hardware you can compare against?
