Subplot Labels

A program originally written for Matlab generates several figures including one with 12 subplots.  The titles for each subplot are on top, and the x-axis designation on the bottom.  What happens is that at the bottom of a plot, it's x axis title ends up below the title of the plot underneath like this:

RCS Error X                                                                      title plot 1
PLOT AREA
RCS Error Y                                                                        title plot 2
Time                                                                                  x-axis label plot 1
PLOT AREA
RCS Error Z                                                                         title plot 3
Time                                                                                    x-axis label plot 2
PLOT AREA

Time                                                                                   x-axis label plot 3

Actually there are 3 columns and 4 rows of subplots, but the above defines the issue

If I could make the subplots be separated vertically more, or get the title and axis designation items closer to their respective plots, I'd be good.  I could even figure it out myself if I could find documentation that addresses locating plot stuff.  All I can find says there are plot characteristic and value pairs, but not what the possibilities are.

Thank You
