Do not forget what Jordi posted, maybe you simply ran into a bug in your
old octave version and the \ operator works for you with that problem
you try to solve when you update to the current version 3.6
Hello,

I have tried today with octave 3.6.1 (on a 64 bits machine but without 64 bits adressing) and ran into the same problem.

I will try to recompile octave with --enable-64 and test.
