When you run gnuplot by itself, is it plotting in an "Aquaterm" window?
That will work regardless of whether your X11 is functioning properly or
not (as per the prior message).
I'm not using the quasi-official Octave-3.2.3 binary, so I don't know
for sure whether it does something to tell gnuplot to use an X11 display
instead of Aquaterm, but that seems like a possibility here.
