This doesn't address the issue, but I had the same problem on RHEL5:

Like the original poster I addressed the issue by building my own
environment with an updated gcc, though this came with its own pitfalls (I'm
glaring at you, libtool).  It would be better to track down the bug itself,
but I can help if you'd prefer to take the workaround.
