I think that's because according to the manual ( http://www.gnu.org/software/octave/doc/interpreter/The-_003ccode_003efor_003c_002fcode_003e-Statement.html#The-_003ccode_003efor_003c_002fcode_003e-Statement ) "The assignment expression in the for statement works a bit differently than Octave's normal assignment statement.
