Would the semi-colon after the 'plot' command hide the resulting plot?

No, the semicolon only suppresses any possible (text) output to the command window.  It's generally just a force of habit (or good practice, or a carry-over from other languages, e.g. Java) for people to put it after every line, even though plot() doesn't have any command window output.
