I build and install 'octave' and it packaged not using root privileges.
My main point is that _default_ behavior is wrong to my taste/liking.
I.e. _by_ _default_ 'octave' behavior WRT packages should be
non-destructive, and that's why I suggest that _by_ _default_ packages
are installed into a directory containing 'octave' version, e.g.
~/octave-3.0.5
instead of just
~/octave
.
