Hello Alejandra,

I guess that the answer largelly depends from the background of the peoples
working with Octave. At the beginning, my guess is that the most used
functions where in the area of the numerical solution of differential
equations, as well as signal filtering, including filter design. Then it
grew and grew and grew, under user's contributions. I used it personaly in
area like algebra (solving overdetermined set of equations in the form Ax=b,
where some columns of A where noised), system modeling, non-linear signal
filtering, robust statistics, ...
