2007/1/29, David Bateman <address@hidden>: Considering the good comments that I have received notably
I'm not sure I see the interest in creating a separate WikiBook for Octave, though of course we value the effort. My reasoning is that as incompatibilities between Matlab and Octave are in most cases considered as bugs, then the Matlab WikiBook should in an ideal world equally apply to Octave. Therefore you are creating additional work for yourself in writing a separate contribution and you'll have to continually keep chasing the original document and porting changes between version. I believe a better way would be to request that the original document includes a section of Octave specific issues to allow the dwindling number of differences between Octave and Matlab to be discussed. Having it integrated in the original document would also make the task of evangelizing Octave that much easier as well..
I did and created the 3 pages below that need edition and complements. http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/MATLAB_Programming/Comparing_Octave http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/MATLAB_Programming/GNU_Octave A short presentation of Octave and its history. http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/MATLAB_Programming/Differences_between_Octave_and_MATLAB The most important differences between Octave and MATLAB that anyone willing to use Octave instead of MATLAB should be aware of. and I have also added another comment on the discussion page : http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Talk:MATLAB_Programming The user who asked me to create a separate Octave wikibook welcomed my modifications and even proposed another template that shows "GNU Octave handles this task differently. For more information see the section about Octave Differences." Thanks for your contributions. Nicolas PS I copied parts from the octave wiki but I could not view its source as I do not find / have its password. Also, can I suggest that the Octave wiki be moved to a mediawiki instead of the current wiki that is much less pleasant to edit ? -- Nicolas Pettiaux - email: address@hidden
