Sorry for responding to myself, but this is a bit of lie. I just
discovered that Octave doesn't list gnuplot explicitly as a dependency
in Debian, but rather lists it as a suggested package you should
install along with Octave.
At any rate, your problem should go away once you successfully install gnuplot.
