In octave-forge in main/miscellaneous there is an xmlread and xmlwrite
function, written by Laurent Mazet. The read function used flexml.pl to
generate a lex file, and I know Laurent had troubles with different
versions of flexml.pl not working correctly. This is why the lex file is
also included in octave-forge so that flexml.pl is not needed..
