I recompiled and it worked. I dunno what was wrong.
./autogen.sh && \
 LDFLAGS=-L/usr/lib/gcc/i486-linux/3.4.4/ CC=gcc-3.4 CXX=g++-3.4 \
./configure --prefix=/opt/octave-cvs && \
 make
