One more thing: if you're using the Fedora Extras version of Octave, I'd 
strongly recommend installing atlas, which is a faster version of lapack 
and blas, which are installed by default. There are different packages 
available that are optimized for different CPUs, so I recommend 
installing the one best suited to your hardware:

atlas: all CPUs
atlas-sse: Pentium III and newer
atlas-sse2: Pentium 4
atlas-3dnow: Athlon
