I had my hand on a Pentium4 computer and compiled ATLAS-3.7.8 for
it (linux, FC3, gcc343). For those who are interested, the binary is
available at:
ftp://coffee.phys.unm.edu/pub/dima/octave/ATLAS_Linux_P4SSE2_2.tar.bz2

There are benchmarks[*] for octave-2.9.1 compiled with that same library
(P4/512kB cache).

ftp://coffee.phys.unm.edu/pub/dima/octave/benchmark_P4.txt

I also re-did benchmarks with
LD_PRELOAD=./libgoto_p4_512-r0.97.so octave
and the numbers are so close, that I wonder if it did use
Goto library. There is a noticeable slowdown in FFT(???)...

[*] benchmarks are:
benchmark.m     -- slightly modified  Francesco Potorti's benchmark v1.10
Octave2.m       -- (in)famous SciViews Octave benchmark
Octave2l.m -- SciViews Octave benchmark, modified for large matrices

Hope it is of some use.

Sincerely,
Dmitri.
