First, I tried gfortran on three old Fortran codes: one encountered an internal compiler error (known), one compiled but failed at execution, andthe third worked properly. In other words, gfortran is still "alpha" and notready to be a work horse yet.
Joe and Samir,Gfortran is getting there very rapidly - see http://gfortran.org and the link to the gfortran list. It matters enormously how recent a snapshot you are using. Check out the gcc-4.00 cvs gcc and gfortran to five it a whirl. If you find bugs, please submit them to gnu bugzilla, especially if the code is fortran77.
