This really isn't the correct list for a hardware/distro discussion. 
Try to find a local user's group which will probably be happy to help 
you out.  Take a look here:

Most major distributions offer Octave "out of the box".  But if you want 
the latest Octave, you may need to compile from source.  Once you get 
linux installed, we would be happy to answer questions about that.
