Here is a tip that does not solve your problem, but is nevertheless very useful:

When you install with "make install" you will not be able to uninstall the 
software
later (eg. when you want to install a new version). Thus I would recommend to
install with "checkinstall" (see http://checkinstall.izto.org/) instead. This 
will
build and install a RPM or DEB package so that you can easily remove the 
software
later. Moreover it has the advantage that you can easily install the package on
other computers as well.
