Jorg,
use 'fid' and the template "%s'".
octave> fid = fopen('text.txt')
fid =
{
~ id = 3
~ name = text.txt
~ mode = r
~ arch = native
~ status = 1
}
octave> fscanf( fid , "%s'" )
ans = '1'
octave> fscanf( fid , "%s'" )
ans = 'Schi'
octave> fscanf( fid , "%s'" )
ans = 'Bucrg'
