loading a data file

I collected data in a text file. I load it with the load command.
Whos -variables gives

prot  type               rows   cols  name
====  ====               ====   ====  ====
 wd   matrix            10001      2  7strun

But when I try to manipulate it, like

>>time = 7strun (:,1)

I get the following:

>>time = 7strun (:,1)
parse error:

>>> time = 7strun (:,1)

Is there something I'm doing wrong? The 7strun variable is in ASCII format.
