maximum commandline length

Hi,
how long can a commandline for the parser be?

I ask, because I want to know how large data can be, which  I pass to
octave via the commandline like this:

a=[23,23,23,23,23,23,23,23,23,23,23,23,23......;..,..,..,..,.........;.......];
