What's wrong with a pipe?
If you have the portable bitmap tools, you can do this:
gset term pbm
gset output "|ppmtogif > file.gif"
plot (...)
Translating a PostScript file to gif or jpeg formats can be done in a
similar way if you have a conversion program that can act as a filter.
