Aah... in a *remote* nano. I've tried that just now, and I get the
same result as you: only three of the example emojis are shown.
I wonder whether it is an issue with libncursesw5 being version
5.9+20140913-1+b1 on the oldstable Debian. Once I ssh into a Debian 9
(libncursesw5 6.0+20161126-1) or Ubuntu 16.04 (libncursesw5
6.0+20160213) nano shows the emojis.
That must be it. The servers I tested run Debian 7 and 8. I can't
find a more modern one. But at least it's clear that it isn't a bug
in nano, but in something else. And since nano makes use only of
ncurses...
