Distributed make with pmake customs

Subject:	Distributed make with pmake customs

I've been reading the README.customs and the pmake distribution
documentation, but I'm still not sure I understand completely.  If gnu
make is compiled with the customs library, will it automatically
detect that a customs demon is running and spawn jobs to remote hosts
or must some other customs program (such as export) be used to cause
this to happen?
