Improving BSD make compatibility

    Hi Paul,

If I came up with a patch that makes GNU make accept $> as an alias for $^ in
order to improve compatibility with BSD make, would you consider its inclusion
in GNU make? $> isn't currently used in GNU make so the change would be
backward-compatible.
