Hi again,
I was able to start it manually by doing the following:
$ sudo -i
# modprobe -r thinkpad_acpi
# modprobe thinkpad_acpi fan_control=1
$ sudo thinkfan /path/to/config-file
It would be nice, however, to have this done automatically at boot.
