grub-emu prints garbage

I have been using grub-emu on Ubuntu 18.04 for a couple months.  Recently I 
brought up a new system with Ubunutu 18.04, and grub-emu prints garbage on the 
screen.

The only significant difference between the two systems is the grub version.  
The "older" system that works correctly has grub version 2.02-2ubuntu8.17, but 
the newly installed system has 2.02-2ubuntu8.18.  The attached screenshots show 
both versions.

I am not in an X Window environment, and $DISPLAY is not set.
