I've never installed Mint, but with the less limiting installation methods I've always chosen, *buntu has never installed its Grub onto any MBR of mine. Usually I install via HTTP by downloading only the installation kernel and initrd and loading them with a previously installed Grub.

I never install from live media, except on very rare occasions for Knoppix.
openSUSE permits wide flexibility in bootloader installation regardless of
installation method. IIRC, so do Debian, Gentoo, Fedora, Mandriva and Mageia.
