You can try the additional option "P", i.e. "tar xPvf tarfile.tar".
This worked for me in a similar situation with tar 1.13.25 (I had the same
error).
"tar --help" tells:
-P, --absolute-names don't strip leading `/'s from file names
It seems to work also in your case.
