This single line worked for me:
(set-face-attribute 'mode-line nil :inherit 'default)

The face gnus-header is defined in gnus-art.el, hence I added this to my
.gnus:
(with-eval-after-load "gnus-art"
(set-face-attribute 'gnus-header nil :inherit 'unspecified))
