Returning to this old thread:
I was trying to do:

(global-set-key (kbd "C-x C-b") 'electric-buffer-list)
(define-key electric-buffer-menu-mode-map (kbd "X") 'save-buffers-kill-emacs)

1st line -- ok
2nd naturally gives an error on startup

Symbol's value as variable is void: ...

I finally came to:

(use-package ebuff-menu
  :bind (("C-x C-b" . electric-buffer-list)
         :map electric-buffer-menu-mode-map
         ("X" . save-buffers-kill-emacs)))

So what's the correct non-use-package way of doing this?
