Yes, I solved it with

  (set-face-attribute 'mode-line nil
                      :overline  'unspecified
                      :underline 'unspecified)

  (set-face-attribute 'mode-line-inactive nil
                      :overline  'unspecified
                      :underline 'unspecified)

I feel like the box around it is more than enough to differentiate  ;)
