If you do a
M-x set-language-environment
either interactively or in your .emacs, then you can switch between
input methods with just C-\. You don't have to "select" an input
method. Some input method apropriate for the language gets chosen
apropriately. I am not sure "how" the default input method is chosen
but the fact is it gets chosen.
