It's annoying, I have the following in my .emacs:

(set-fontset-font ; fix japanese font
 "fontset-default" 'japanese-jisx0208
 (if (eq window-system 'x)
     "-jis-fixed-medium-r-normal--24-230-75-75-c-240-jisx0208.1983-0"
 "-outline-MS Mincho-normal-normal-normal-mono-24-*-*-*-c-*-jisx0208*-*"))
