Indention becomes very slow |

I am finding that pressing [TAB] (auto-indent) causes emacs to become
unresponsive for a second or two when editing large files in python-mode. The
file is about 3000 lines long. Is there anything I can do besides making the
file shorter to avoid this problem?
I am using emacs-snapshot version 1:20081013-1 on Ubuntu (Intrepid 8.10).
