IIRC:
Backspace is translated to DEL by default.
DEL is bound to `isearch-delete-char' in `isearch-mode-map', but
backspace isn't bound there at all. Binding backspace overrides the
translation, which is responsible for the meaning in `isearch-mode-map'.
