My god, are there still gopher servers out there! I've not come across a
gopher server since the early 90s. 

There is no relationship between w3 and w3m. W3 is a web browser written
totally in emacs lisp. W3m is a wrapper around the w3m pager. 

Unfortunately, W3 has been lacking in support, especially since w3m
became popular. W3 can be a bit slow (though this probably isn't as big
an issue as it was when I used it int he late 90s given faster cpus and
more memory etc. 

There use to be a couple of gopher clients available - to what extent
they would run with modern emacs is unknown. In the past, I've had many
very old emacs lisp packages that have worked perfectly, but then I've
had others that would require so much work, I've just given up.

I think trial and error is your only hope. Google and try out what you
find.
