sorry for late reply, have not been using computer for a bit, reading books about ruby instead.

you advised
* create an empty directory and 'cd' to it
* run the 'configure' script from the source directory
* type 'make bootstrap'
* get coffee
* type 'make install'

I made a directory called documents. not liked it. deleted directory. made a text file called documents
