This gives an aerror. I tried
        (setq global-highlight-changesĀ 1)
and
        (setq global-highlight-changesĀ t)

These do not give an error, but do also not have an influence.

I put the following in my .emacs:
        (global-set-key [f12] 'highlight-changes-mode)

So I can very easily set and reset it.
