Using your text as example, first place the cursor on the spot marked
with "*" and press C-SPC, then move cursor to "!", then C-x r d

*    1  I use
 GNU Emacs 21.4.1 (i386-redhat-linux-gnu, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars)
 of 2006-03-07 on hs20-bc1-6.build.redhat.com

 when I place number lines in-front of lines in a region using the
 command
 M-h C-u M-| cat -n RET

 and later, after saving the file and rebooting and what-have-you want
 to remove the lines, the next command fails,
 C-x r d

 !how can I get the job done?
