You could try to add:
(setq default-frame-alist '(
(font . "fontset-11pt_adobe_courier")
; (font . "-adobe-courier-medium-r-*-11-*-iso10646-1")
))
or use an X resource to specify font and size:
Emacs*font: -*-lucidatypewriter-medium-r-*-*-10-*-*-*-m-*-
iso10646-1
